Hormones are your body’s chemical messengers that are secreted by the endocrine glands (Ovaries, Testes, Adrenal, Pituitary, Thyroid, Hypothalamus, Pineal, Pancreas) and travel in your bloodstream to reach specific target cells or organs. Hormones work like a key in a lock. When the hormone reaches a cell with a receptor that fits, it attaches to the receptor and sends the cell instructions that may be to produce a protein or to multiply. This action creates a reaction throughout the body.
Hormones control a vast variety of biological processes such as reproduction, metabolism, mood, emotions, sexual function, immune function, growth and development. Hormones are powerful and work at very small concentrations that can cause big changes on a cellular level or within your entire body.
Endocrine disruptors can be very dangerous to your body’s hormonal health. When these disruptors are absorbed into the body they either mimic or block hormones directly affecting your body’s normal healthy functions. Endocrine disruptors are found in synthetic hormones, plastics, pesticides, detergents and many chemicals thus affecting the food we eat, the water we drink and the air we breathe.
